No. 3 Texas A&M (8-0, 5-0 SEC) enters the all-important second bye week of the season with another chance to rest and refuel before taking on the Missouri Tigers in Columbus next Saturday afternoon. After watching this team over the past eight wins, the Aggies are more than good enough to compete for, yes, a National Championship.
While that may sound crazy to some, especially to a particular fanbase less than two hours away from College Station, Texas A&M is by far the most balanced team outside of Ohio State and Indiana, posessing an explosive offense led by starting quarterback Marcel Reed, and a defense that currently leads the country in sacks (32), led by senior edge Cashius Howell’s breakout season.

Reed, who has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns, paired with 349 rushing yards and six scores, is a definite Heisman candidate after shredding LSU’s defense for four more touchdowns and 108 yards on the ground, while the pass rush produced seven sacks and 20 pressures, leading to Saturday’s 49-25 win in Death Valley.
Right now, according to ESPN’s College Football Power Index, Texas A&M has a 96.4% chance to make the College Football Playoff, a 16.2% chance to win the SEC Championship Game, and the fourth-best odds (19.9%) to win the National Championship.
On Thursday, Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt released his likely conference championship picks for all Power 4 conferences and the Group of Six. Klatt fully believes in Texas A&M’s “balanced” attack and chose the Aggies to make their way to Atlanta and leave with a win.
“In the SEC, I really like Texas A&M, they’re balanced, I love what Marcel Reed has been able to do under Mike Elko.”
Since entering the SEC before the 2012 season, Texas A&M has not appeared in the SEC Championship game, and outside of 2012 and 2020, has not come close to a trip to Atlanta. However, this season, even with four all-important regular-season games, feels different.
