Former Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman unsurprisingly entered the transfer portal after another injury-riddled season for the former five-star prospect, who ultimately lost the starting job to Marcel Reed following the Aggies’ 38-23 comeback win over LSU.
Weigman, who dealt with a nagging shoulder injury throughout the 2024 season, entered the transfer portal with middling options compared to his elite recruiting prowess, but chose to stay home and commit to the Houston Cougars, where his father is an alumnus and he attended games during his childhood. Needing a quarterback, this was the right fit for Weigman to re-establish himself as a respected signal caller.

Over seven months later, the Weigman era in Houston officially began under head coach Willie Fritz, as Weigman faced Stephen F. Austin with an eye on proving to all his doubters that his playmaking ability is still intact. Early on, the redshirt junior, like most quarterbacks in their first game, was shaky, but he found his groove as the game progressed.
As he gained comfort in the pocket, Weigman threw his first Cougars touchdown after hitting on a fade route to tight end Tanner Koezel to put Houston up 7-0.
Later in the game, up a comfortable 17-0, Weigman delivered an impressive strike in a tight window to wide receiver Amare Thomas for the 20-yard score. Up 27-0, which ended as the final score, Weigman hit the bench to prevent any costly late-game attrition, ending his day 15-24 for 159 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Houston will travel to face Rice next Saturday, followed by hosting Colorado to start Big 12 play the following weekend.
