On Thursday, Elder was announced as part of the 2026 class alongside former West Texas A&M volleyball player and coach Kendra Potts.

The honor adds to a long list of accomplishments for Elder, who spent 18 seasons leading the Mustangs and finished as the program’s winningest coach.

A 1985 Midwestern State graduate himself, Elder took over the men’s soccer program in 2000 and compiled a 274-56-33 record. He finished his career with an .800 winning percentage, which ranked second all-time among NCAA Division II coaches and 12th across all NCAA divisions.

Midwestern State posted a winning record in each of Elder’s 18 seasons as head coach. The Mustangs reached the NCAA postseason 13 times, advancing to the national quarterfinals six times and the Final Four in 2007 and 2010.

The Mustangs also won nine conference championships during Elder’s tenure.

Elder became the winningest coach in program history on Sept. 10, 2015, when the Mustangs defeated Southern Nazarene 8-1 for his 222nd career victory. The win surpassed his former coach and mentor, Howard Patterson.

His final season was also one of the program’s best. Midwestern State finished 20-0-3 before falling to Cal Poly Pomona on penalty kicks in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.

Elder stepped away from the program following that season, ending a coaching run that also included eight conference coach of the year honors and seven NSCAA Region Coach of the Year selections.

That success extended to his players as well. Twenty-seven Midwestern State players earned All-America recognition during Elder’s time at the helm.

His selection makes him the second Midwestern State representative inducted into the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor. Former MSU football standout Dominic Rhodes became the school’s first inductee in 2021.
