Texas A&M’s basketball program is in good hands under new head coach Bucky McMillan. While his inaugural 2025 season is the focus, the Alabama native is hard at work on the recruiting trail, contacting a long list of 2026 and 2027 prospects, which includes Top-15 ranked point guard Reese Alston from the 2027 cycle, who has already visited College Station during the final year of Buzz Williams running things.
Under McMillan, Texas A&M’s offense is built around speed and shooting efficiency, which sounds basic, but requires reliable guards who can produce from beyond the arc, and forwards who can play inside out, which isn’t difficult to find with today’s versatile athletes.
On the 14-man 2025 roster, which is made up of 12 players from the transfer portal, forward Mackenzie Mgbako and senior guard Pop Issacs, while forwards Zach Clemence and Jamie Vinson possess the size to produce inside, and can also pop out for 3-pointers when asked.
Alston is one of the top-ranked 2027 guards for a reason, as the gifted scorer possesses the adequate size at 6’2″ and plays fast, showing the ability to score at every level. During his summer tour with the Puma Pro16 16U Circuit championship, Alston averaged a team-high 14.9 points.
On Monday, On3’s Jamie Shaw released his recent interview with Alston, which included his takeaway after his last visit to Texas A&M.
“I mean, it was definitely a great atmosphere. They have newer facilities, and I just like the school in general, so it’s definitely a great place. They just like how I play as a point guard.”
Purdue, Houston, and Texas are also in the play, which is not a surprise given each program’s blue-blood status. At the same time, McMillan is dedicated to building Texas A&M into one of the top basketball programs in the SEC, which will result in better recruiting outcomes.
