The Texas UIL boys high school basketball playoffs start on Monday, Feb. 23, with the bidistrict round.
Twenty El Paso teams will play both in El Paso and out of town. The bidistrict round continues on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
District 1-6A will have to have a mini-tournament to decide three of the four playoff qualifiers
This year’s district champions are Eastlake in District 1-6A, Chapin in District 1-5A, Americas in District 2-5A, Bowie in District 1-4A and Mountain View in District 2-4A.
District 1-6A chaos
Eastlake won the District 1-6A title and is in. But Coronado, Franklin, Montwood and Eastwood all tied for second place with a 7-5 record after a wild Tuesday in which Pebble Hills defeated Coronado, Eastwood defeated Eastlake and Montwood defeated Franklin.
Coronado, Franklin , Montwood and Eastwood will play multiple games over two days to determine the other three teams who will play in the Class 6A playoofs.
On Thursday, Coronado will play Eastwood at 6 p.m. at Bowie HS and Franklin and Montwood will play at 7 p.m. at Bel Air High School.
On Friday two games are scheduled at Bel Air High School at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The losers from Thursday will play at 6 p.m. The winners will play each other at 7:30 p.m.
The winners from Thursday’s games will earn a spot in the playoffs. The losers in Friday’s loser matchup will be eliminated. There are multiple games set because of teams being separated into Division 1 and Division 2.
After Friday’s games, the playoff scenario will be resolved.
“We knew coming into this season, the district was very competitive,” Franklin High School coach Adam Castillo said. “There were lots of hard fought, close games throughout the season.”
