The El Paso community honored the lives lost at the Cielo Vista Walmart mass shooting as part of the seventh anniversary of the day a gunman took the lives of 23 people and injured dozens more.
El Paso County marked the anniversary with a reading of the victims’ names at the El Paso County Healing Garden Sunday evening, Aug. 2, in Ascarate Park, a place for reflection and remembrance for families and community members.
On Aug. 3, 2019, a gunman killed 23 people, including El Paso residents and Mexican citizens, in an attack that left a lasting impact on the Borderland. In the years since, the community has continued to heal while honoring the victims and those affected.
El Paso leaders marked the anniversary as well. U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso, said the attack continues to affect survivors, victims’ families and the broader community, while emphasizing the city’s resilience and ongoing healing efforts.
“I’m thinking today of those families still mourning their loved ones, and of the El Pasoans who struggle with their injuries, both visible and invisible.”
