The Dallas Cowboys are playing a football game for the first time in 216 days. And while this one won’t count for anything official, the 2025 preseason opener versus the Los Angeles Rams should start to give fans a fair idea of what new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and his revamped staff have accomplished with the past seven months.
Of course, much attention will be paid to Cowboys newcomers like quarterback Joe Milton, who has impressed in camp and hopes to see a good amount of work in his Dallas debut. How the running back workload is split among the few healthy options- Javonte Williams, Deuce Vaughn, rookie Phil Mafah, and maybe even newly-re-signed Malik Davis- will be fascinating to see as well. And has coordinator Matt Eberflus come up with a scheme that shored up a Cowboys defense that struggled last season? Sean McVay’s crew will provide the first test, even after the two teams practiced together this past week.
Schottenheimer has admitted he’ll be holding back somewhat during the preseason, not giving away a free preview of the entire playbook before Week 1. But Saturday night should start to answer at least a few questions for the 2025 Cowboys, with plenty of storylines to keep an eye on.
