Cowboys Headlines: Does flap over Micah's agent matter? Is DeMarcus Lawrence Ring-worthy?

The firestorm over Jerry Jones’s comments about Micah Parsons’s agent entered its second day on Wednesday, but beyond the front-office end-around, back-door dealing, and supposed personal attack, does any of it really matter in terms of actually getting a deal done with the game-changing pass rusher? The answer may surprise you. But “Agent-gate” wasn’t the only shocking thing to come from the Cowboys owner. He also made a somewhat bizarre suggestion that he’s considering bestowing the franchise’s ultimate honor on a recently-departed player, and it has some questioning whether the Ring of Honor still means what it used to.

Elsewhere in this news roundup, mock season motors right along. We’ve got details on what Brian Schottenheimer could be looking for with the 12th pick, one outlet’s take on the perfect 1-2 punch with the first two picks, and a full seven-round haul that addresses a ton of needs. Also, the Cowboys hope to get some work in with another team this summer, an up-and-coming youngster hopes a new number’s rich history helps his own stats in Year Two, and an AFC powerhouse seeks to stake its claim on a holiday all its own, Dallas Cowboy Thanksgiving-style.

The brouhaha over Jones’s comments about agent David Mulugheta is much ado about nothing. Yes, Jones and Parsons came to their own meeting of the minds about the key issues of a new deal. After all, the two men have each said they enjoy a direct relationship with the other. But no deal was ever going to happen without Parsons getting his agent involved. And Mulugheta is too much of a professional to let some perceived diss get in the way of what could be a record-breaking deal for his client. Jones wants Parsons to be more of a clubhouse leader, and he knows he has a full year plus back-to-back franchise tags in his back pocket to use on Parsons if he needs to.

DeMarcus Lawrence’s unexpected jab at his former team after leaving doesn’t appear to have soured Jones’s opinion of the pass rusher. “It will have zero input on what he said as to when I’m thinking about the Ring of Honor,” Jones said this week. The implication that Lawrence would even be under consideration for the franchise’s ultimate accolade shocked many. Lawrence was very good during his Dallas tenure, but not even close to the level of Bob Lilly, Randy White, and DeMarcus Ware.

Statements from the new head coach this week indicate he may be looking at defense with the team’s first-round draft pick. Texas A&M end Shemar Stewart and Michigan cornerback Will Johnson can certainly influence a game with their big-play ability. But Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan remains the most commonly linked player to Dallas for good reason; he can win in contested situations and understands how to find soft spots in zones which have traditionally given the Cowboys’ passing offense fits.

A home-run first-round selection is great, but coming away with two perfect picks really makes the needle move on a team’s improvement. With Ashton Jeanty unlikely to last until 12, Dallas could still grab McMillan on the first night of the draft and then come back around to get their workhorse running back in Ohio State’s TreVeyon Henderson at 44. That’s the beginning of a great draft class, no matter what happens in later rounds.

This full-length mock has Dallas taking Texas WR Matthew Golden in the first round as a much-needed complement to CeeDee Lamb. The team goes defense with their next two picks, taking cornerback Trey Amos and D-lineman Jordan Burch. Quarterback Quinn Ewers joins the club in Round 5, as do Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks and Minnesota offensive lineman Tyler Cooper. The draft haul wraps up with three defensive talents from top programs and a tight end who could be an immediate contributor.

After dwarfing the ratings of the NBA’s televised offerings on Christmas Day 2024, the NFL is going even bigger this year. But the three games coming this Dec. 25 will completely bypass the traditional networks and be available only on the two popular streaming services. Get used to that; sources say the NFL is likely to opt out of its current media rights deals early, maybe as soon as 2029, and lean even further into streaming. In other TV news, the league announced it will now reserve the right to flex Thursday night games with just 21 days notice, rather than 28.

The Chiefs apparently want to be a Christmas mainstay, the way the Cowboys and Lions have become fixtures at America’s Thanksgiving Day tables. The team has played on the Dec. 25 holiday each of the past two seasons and have reportedly asked the league to keep the tradition going. They are expected to be named the Chargers’ opponents for this Christmas.
