It’s shaping up to be a busy week for NFL coaches and scouts as they fan out across the country for pro day at some of the top college programs. And for fans and observers looking to get an inkling of who their team might be eyeing, watching to see who goes to which school is a big part of the intel. The Cowboys had a major presence in Austin, where one Longhorn standout at a position of need got wined and dined before his workout. That comes shortly after Baylor’s pro day, where an intriguing tight end prospect got put through the paces by the Cowboys’ own position coach, perhaps signaling the team’s particular interest. Expect more breadcrumbs to be dropped when Dallas staffers also make an appearance at Texas A&M and Texas Tech before the week is out.
The Cowboys are definitely leaning defense with their top picks, but head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed Tuesday that the goal is to not be forced into reaching for a player at any one position. To that end, they’re continuing to make roster additions… like cornerback Derion Kendrick, a former Georgia Bulldog with two national championships under his belt. And they may not be done yet: we’ve got trade targets we’re watching, as well as the details on a plan that could net them both a top-10 draft pick and a second-round selection.
One more month of mock drafts to go, and things are getting interesting. ESPN has the Cowboys spending their top pick on a player who hasn’t taken the field in over a year, while CBS likes a prospect slated to go much later… and NFL.com has Miami superstar Rueben Bain Jr. somehow falling to Dallas at No. 12. But what if the first 11 picks turn out to be a worst-case scenario? Would the Cowboys- gulp- go offense?!?
Around the league, a 14-year veteran calls it quits in Tampa, the Falcons just made their RB room very confusing come roll-call time, and we dig into the massive contract signed by Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba; does it impact the George Pickens strategy? The new boss of the players union doesn’t sound like he’s on board for an 18-game season, and we bring you the wild story of one young prospect looking to be the NFL’s next kicking phenom. From teaching himself English and watching kicking tutorials on YouTube to volunteering with a Japanese league just to get practice time on their field and parlaying that into a D-1 roster spot, get to know the “Tokyo Toe.”
