Chihuahuas snap losing streak, returning home to host Salt Lake City

A miserable second half of the season for the El Paso Chihuahuas got a boost when they won three straight games to close their series at Reno, which broke a nine-game losing streak.

That improved them to 12-26 in the second half, 14 1/2 games back of East leader Sugar Land.

El Paso will look to cut into that when it hosts Salt Lake City in a six-game set starting Tuesday at Southwest University Park.

Carlos Rodriguez has big series

The star for the Chihuahuas in Reno was center fielder Carlos Rodriguez, who had three triples in the series. That was part of 11 hits he had in the six games. He is now hitting .312.

By taking three of six games, this marked the first time the Chihuahuas won or split a series since early July, when they won four of six from Sacramento.

Upcoming promotions

The Chihuahuas are filled with promotions in the last four games of their upcoming series with Salt Lake.

Christian Stoinev and his Chihuahua, Scooby, will perform a show full of acrobatics and tricks on Thursday, Aug. 13. A Matachines night, including a Matachines bobblehead giveaway to the first 1,500 fans, is being held Friday, Aug. 14.

A fireworks spectacular will be on Saturday, Aug. 15, while Prince and Princess Day, which will include “royal-themed activities,” will happen Sunday, Aug. 16, followed by kids running the bases.

Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove shines with El Paso Chihuahuas

San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove began a rehab assignment with El Paso on Sunday, Aug. 9, when he allowed one run in 3.1 innings in his first MLB injury rehab start in Triple-A this year. He struck out two, didn’t walk anybody and threw 53 pitches. Musgrove previously pitched for the Chihuahuas on rehab for one start in 2023.

It is unknown if Musgrove will make another start for the Chihuahuas as part of his rehab assignment.

San Diego Padres pitcher David Morgan pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings during a Saturday, Aug. 8, MLB injury rehab for the Chihuahuas.
