Bonham Middle School claims regional science bowl title

Bonham Middle School Team 1 took top honors at the Pantex Regional Middle School Science Bowl on Jan. 31 after a full day of competition at Amarillo’s AmTech Career Academy.

The event brought together 24 teams from 13 middle schools across the region to test their knowledge in science, math and critical thinking. After about 10 hours of head-to-head rounds, Bonham Middle School Team 1 emerged as the champion, earning $1,000 for the school and an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., scheduled for the final week of April.

The win marked a return to the top for Amarillo ISD’s Bonham Middle School, which won the regional competition in 2024 and finished second in 2025.

Second place this year went to Hutchinson Middle School Team 1 from Lubbock, which received $500, while Bonham Middle School Team 2 finished third and earned $250.

The Pantex Regional Middle School Science Bowl is a fast-paced academic competition that challenges students in science, technology, engineering and math through quiz-style matches. Teams answer timed questions covering subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, earth science and mathematics, with success depending on teamwork, communication and quick problem-solving.

In addition to academic performance, teams were evaluated on teamwork and sportsmanship during the morning rounds. The Sportsmanship Award was presented to All Saints Episcopal School Team 2 from Lubbock, which also received $250 for its school.

The next event in the series, the Pantex Regional High School Science Bowl, is scheduled for Feb. 21 and will also be held at AmTech Career Academy.
