For nearly two decades, visitors to the Amarillo Zoo often heard him before they saw him — a deep, thunderous roar echoing across the grounds.
Solomon, the zoo’s iconic African lion and one of its most beloved residents, died earlier this month of natural causes at the age of 20, the city of Amarillo announced Wednesday, June 25.
“Solomon was more than just a lion — he was a cornerstone of the Amarillo Zoo,” said Zoo Curator Berkeley Hilliard. “For two decades, he inspired wonder in every roar and captured the hearts of thousands. His legacy will live on in the memories of all who were lucky enough to know him.”
In recent weeks, Solomon had been receiving palliative care as his health declined due to age-related complications. While wild lions typically live 10 to 12 years — and up to 15 to 18 years in human care — Solomon surpassed expectations, thanks to the dedication of his keepers and veterinary team.
His longevity, zoo officials said, was a reflection of the quality of care he received and the deep bond he shared with those around him.
“Solomon’s spirit remained strong,” Hilliard said. “His presence continued to command admiration from guests and staff alike. The bond between animal care staff and the animals they look after is profound and personal, and the loss of a longtime companion like Solomon is deeply felt.”
Solomon arrived at the Amarillo Zoo in 2006 from a wildlife sanctuary, quickly becoming a favorite among visitors and staff.
“He had regal posture and a powerful roar,” Hilliard said. “He served as an ambassador for his species, helping educate the public about conservation and the lives of lions in the wild.”
Zoo staff said his passing has also impacted his companions, lionesses Sarai and Sheba.
“They are doing well,” Hilliard said. “They’re receiving extra attention, enrichment and care as they adjust to this change.”
The Amarillo Zoo is inviting visitors and community members to share memories and words of support on its social media platforms.
“We want to honor Solomon’s life and celebrate the indelible mark he left on the Amarillo Zoo and the city for which he roared,” Hilliard said.
