An Amarillo resident died after a two-vehicle crash in southwest Amarillo Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed Friday.
Jason Armstrong, 46, of Amarillo, was taken to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died from injuries he sustained in the crash, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 2016 Dodge Charger being driven by a 17-year-old of Amarillo was traveling south in the outside lane on Bell Street at about 12:29 p.m. Thursday. At the same time, a 2020 Volkswagon Tiguan, being driven by Armstrong, was turning north onto Bell Street from a private drive, where both vehicles collided.
Armstrong, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle upon impact, DPS said.
The other driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
The road was slick due to rain, with a posted speed limit of 50 mph. Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The Amarillo Police Department issued a traffic alert for the road being shut down in both directions from Canyon Drive south to near Scotty Drive Thursday while its Traffic Investigation Unit worked at the scene of the crash.
This is a developing story; more information will be added as it becomes available.
