The Amarillo Public Library has a bunch of services and activities for the community coming up this month.
APL works with the Amarillo Department of Public Health to offer vaccination clinics to Amarillo families over the summer. On various days, Public Health’s mobile unit has been parked at one of APL five locations, from11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to provide free vaccinations for uninsured and Medicaid eligible families.

Upcoming APL events, classes and other activities
Flying Demos with Amarillo Radio Kontrol Society (ARKS): An exciting air show, presented by ARKS with remote aircraft and flight simulators (weather permitting) is being offered at the Southwest Branch Library, 6801 W. 45th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7. Learn about remote-controlled aircraft and try flying one in a simulator.
Crafthouse Cinema to present Monsters University: Crafthouse Cinema will be in the Back to School spirit, with the monthly movie program screening”Monsters University.” Join the fun and watch the movie, enjoy popcorn, and make some cool crafts on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Northwest Branch Library, 6100 SW 9th.
Snail Mail Club revisits the art of handwritten letters: Learn how to slow down and reconnect through the art of handwritten letters. This club designs, writes, draws, and sends physical mail through the United States Postal Service. Build community, explore creativity, and share the simple joy of receiving a real letter in the mail. Supplies will be provided. The event is taking place at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at the North Branch Library, 1500 NE 24th.
Learn a second language: Classes are starting early for the fall term, and those interested can sign up for classes. At the East Branch Library, 2232 SE 27th, registration is Tuesday, Aug. 11, and classes meet at 6 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, Aug. 17 through Dec. 15. At the Downtown Library, 413 SE 4th, registration is Thursday, Aug. 13, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and classes meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 18 through Dec. 10.
Spanish as a Second Language classes will offer quick reviews on Monday, Aug. 10 and Saturdays, Aug. 8 and 22 after 3 p.m.; and Fridays, Aug. 14 and 28 after 2 p.m.; before the new term starts in September.
Adult Classes available include Chair Yoga: Learn a gentle form of yoga, done while seated or using a chair for balance, which makes practice more accessible, Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. at Southwest Branch Library, 6801 W 45th.
Handbound – Book Binding made simple: Come and discuss various bookbinding techniques at their monthly bookbinding club. They provide the tools, teach the techniques, and provide the resources for self-exploration in the art of bookbinding: Saturday, Aug. 8 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Downtown Library, 413 SE 4th.
Memory Café: The gathering offers people dealing with memory issues and their care partners a chance to participate in enrichment activities in a safe and accepting atmosphere. For more information, call 806-378-6019. Participate on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Downtown Library, 413 SE 4th.
Craft Group: Bring whatever project you are working on right now. You’ll have time and space to work with other crafters on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 5 p.m. at the East Branch Library, 2232 SE 27th.
LOSS Support Group: The Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS) Team offers no-cost resources and services to help survivors through the grieving process on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m., Southwest Branch Library, 6801 W 45th.
Piece by (Puzzle) Piece: Calling all jigsaw puzzle fans to gather Saturday, Aug. 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Northwest Branch Library, 6100 SW 9th. The library is also looking for donations of puzzles with 300 to 500 pieces, especially those with larger puzzle pieces.
Saving the Southern Plains Bison Herd: Presented in partnership with the Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight Historic Ranch site, this program focuses on the Goodnights’ efforts to save the Southern Plains Bison. It will be presented Saturday, Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Downtown Library, 413 SE 4th Ave.
In addition to these classes, there are a number of book clubs available and a plethora of services online for your perusal including Comics Plus, Kanopy (movies, etc.) PressReader, Transparent Language, Tumble Books and Udemy to help to improve work-related skills or further develop a personal interest.
