Taylor Moreno, a 2nd-grade teacher at Bonham Elementary in Abilene, has been selected as the Abilene Reporter-News/Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union “Amazing Teacher” of the Month.
Of her nomination, Moreno said: “I was inspired to pursue teaching by the educators who impacted my own life as a student in Abilene ISD. Their dedication, encouragement, and belief in me helped shape who I am today, and I wanted to give that same sense of support and opportunity back to future students. I teach in a Title 1 school and grew up in a similar way as many of my students. My own teachers helped me realize that my circumstances as a child did not have to be my future. My 5th grade teacher, Sharon Qualls, had the most profound impact on me. On the last day of 5th grade she told me, “You will be valedictorian when you graduate.” While I definitely was not valedictorian upon graduation, it meant the world to me that someone out there believed in me the way she did.”
Lisa Blackwell nominated her, praising her year-round dedication and her commitment to supporting the entire school community.
“Taylor is a non-stop working, dedicated teacher for not only her second-grade students, but Bonham Elementary School as a whole. She gives of herself every day, year round. Whatever makes student learning goals happen or teachers’ jobs more fun and efficient, she’s leading,” Blackwell wrote in her nomination.
“To be nominated by a former teammate means so much. She was right beside me in the day-to-day grind and knows how hard a job teaching truly is. To be honored by her means the world,” Moreno responded.
About the school
Bonham Elementary, part of Abilene ISD, is located in Abilene, Texas. The public elementary school serves students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade and has approximately 478 students enrolled.
