Abilene murder suspect's brother still held in Taylor County Jail

Two relatives of an Abilene murder suspect have been accused of concealing him during a manhunt that stretched to Fort Worth where he was arrested, police said in a media release.

Hit-and-run murder suspect Christopher Covington-Smith’s father and brother were arrested Friday and charged with hindering apprehension/prosecution of a known felon, an Abilene Police Department media release said Friday.

His brother, Anton Demarcus Covington, was still being held Monday in Taylor County Jail on $15,000 on total bonds, online jail records show. His father, Shannon Dwayne Covington, was free from jail Monday on a $10,000 bond.

Hindering the apprehension/prosecution of a known felon is a third degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison.

Police said Covington-Smith fled the scene after a hit-and-run Thursday at the corner of Corsicana Avenue and Quail Hollow that left pedestrian Corrisa Trowbridge, 31, dead. Covington-Smith was later arrested in Fort Worth for a first-degree murder charge, which is punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison.

Covington-Smith was being held Monday in a Tarrant County jail under APD’s authority, pending extradition to Taylor County, according to jail records and police.

His brother was being held on a $10,000 bond for the hindering charge and a $5,000 recommended bond for a cocaine possession charge, online jail records show.

The drug possession charge is a state jail felony. It is punishable by 180 days to two years in a state jail facility.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Police were called out just after 4 a.m. Thursday to a hit-and-run at the corner of Corsicana Avenue and Quail Hollow, the APD said in an earlier media release.

Police found Trowbridge laying unresponsive in the street, police said. She had suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Taylor County Justice of the Peace Mike McAuliffe.

The U.S. Marshals Office out of Abilene arrested Covington-Smith on Friday in Fort Worth on a Taylor County murder warrant in connection with Trowbridge’s death, police have said.

With the assistance of APD’s law enforcement partners, including the U.S. Marshals Office, he was taken into custody, police said.
