El Paso police arrested Arroyo on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on the night of the shooting, a news release by police spokesman Officer Adrian Cisneros stated on Wednesday, May 13.

El Paso County jail records show that Arroyo was released from jail after posting a $150,000 surety bond on Wednesday, May 13. No attorney is listed for him.

The EPPD news release has his name as “Javier Arroyo Gerardo” though jail records show him as “Gerardo Javier Arroyo.”

Both men are from Las Cruces, but police officials did not disclose whether they knew each other.

The shooting occurred about 9:15 p.m. near EP Underground, a hardcore music venue at 3016 Gateway East Blvd., which an online flyer advertised as an all-ages show featuring deathcore bands on Monday, May 11.

Deathcore is a rock music genre combining death metal, metalcore and hardcore punk.

During the event, an altercation broke out between Luevano and Arroyo, who allegedly used a handgun to shoot Luevano multiple times, police said. Luevano was hospitalized in El Paso in critical condition.

Luevano was leaving the hardcore show at EP Underground when he was shot four times, including suffering wounds to his lungs, liver and an arm, stated a GoFundMe page created by a Las Cruces woman, Becky Urbina, who identified herself as Luevano’s mother.

The fundraiser described Luevano as a kind-hearted person, “a light in this world” who “makes everyone feel welcome, loved, and seen.”

“Jose has a huge heart and a contagious spirit that brings people together,” the GoFundMe page stated. “He loves riding his motorcycle, supporting local and start-up bands, going to shows, and simply enjoying life with the people he cares about most. Music and community mean everything to him, and he has always been the first to show up and support others chasing their dreams.”

The page is collecting funds for what is expected to be extensive medical care, rehabilitation and recovery.
