Texas A&M is officially a finalist for one of the top safety prospects in the 2026 recruiting class. After landing four-star Chace Collins, coach Mike Elko and his defensive back staff are looking to add four-star safety Tylan Wilson out of Mississippi and four-star defensive back Tamarion Watkins out of South Carolina.
While Tylan Wilson has received a prediction to land with the Aggies, Watkins, who announced his commitment date on Thursday, is still predicted to land with South Carolina. Still, it will likely come down to his announcement, which will now take place on Monday, July 14, in front of his family, coaches, and peers at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
At the next level, Watkins looks like the next starting nickel corner due to his speed and his elite coverage skills, and could take on a rotational role as soon as he steps on campus. Watkins is a form tackler who isn’t afraid to make contact when needed. During his 2024 junior season, he recorded 75 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and three interceptions.
Last season, Texas A&M’s nickel corner experiment included senior Jaydon Hill, who struggled throughout the year, mainly due to Tyreek Chappell’s season-ending injury. With Chappell back in the lineup, this problem won’t be solved entirely, making Watkins a must-have for the future.
Beating out South Carolina will be tough, but after a successful official visit to College Station two weeks ago, I’m not counting the Aggies out. According to 247Sports, Watkins is the 29th-ranked safety prospect in the 2026 cycle and the 7th-ranked prospect in South Carolina.
