MASSILLON ‒ The Massillon City Board of Education is expected to vote on the sale of the former York Elementary property at its May 27 meeting.
The property, at 2219 Massachusetts Ave. SE, was sold via auction May 8.
Jonathan Schlabach had the winning bid of $262,350. The buyer will also pay a 10% buyer’s premium to Kiko, which conducted the auction.
It is unclear what Schlabach plans to do with the property. The Independent could not locate a phone number for Schlabach. Kiko did not respond to requests for comment.
The Board of Education has the right to accept or reject the highest bid, Treasurer Ryker Locke said.
Four bidders placed bids during the auction at the district administrative building. The 5.6-acre site has been vacant since the district closed the school in 2009 and it was razed in 2010.
This is the first of four district-owned properties set to be auctioned this month. The former Franklin, Gorrell and Whittier properties will be up for auction at 12:30 p.m. June 12.
Those three schools were closed at the end of the 2024-25 school year and replaced with the two new East and West elementaries that opened this school year.
Those school buildings were razed and site work is being completed.
The Franklin property at 1237 16th St. SE is 7.28 acres. Whittier, at 1212 10th St. NE, has 4.74 acres and the Gorrell site, 2420 Schuler Ave. NE, is the largest at 7.89 acres.
In June 2024, the district auctioned two properties that once housed Emerson Elementary School at 724 Walnut Ave. SE and Bowers Elementary at 1041 32nd St. NW. That auction netted more than $400,000.
