An iconic old-fashioned hamburger chain is planning a new restaurant on the city of Delaware’s booming east side.
The Wendy’s Company is moving forward with a new 2,146-square-foot restaurant on an undeveloped, nearly 1-acre lot at 12 Glenn Road within the Glennwood Commons Shopping Center. The site is along the west side of Glenn Road, southwest of the U.S. 36/State Route 37 intersection and immediately north of the Meijer access drive.
The Delaware Planning Commission unanimously approved the restaurant plans during its June 3 meeting, and the proposed development now heads to Delaware City Council.
The global chain, headquartered in Dublin in central Ohio, has 7,397 locations around the globe, including 5,969 in the United States.
The new Wendy’s will look similar to other Wendy’s locations with a faux brick and wood facade and large glass windows to go along with the classic Wendy’s red color scheme. It will have a drive-through lane that starts at the front of the building on the east side of the property and wraps around the building, according to a staff report on the development.

The restaurant will be accessed from an interior access drive to be constructed within the shopping center. Additional plans have been submitted to extend the access drive past the Wendy’s site to provide access to another lot to the north, the staff report shows.
The new Wendy’s will have 25 parking spots, with two designated as Americans with Disabilities Act [ADA] spaces and six for pick-up and delivery orders. The restaurant will also have three Frosty-shaped bike racks, the staff report states.
A sidewalk will be extended along the interior drive, and a 10-foot multi-use path is required to be constructed along Glenn Road. But the staff report states Wendy’s will pay a fee in leu of constructing their portion of the path because of other improvements planned for the roadway.
The new fast-food restaurant is just the latest in a string of developments on Delaware city’s rapidly growing east side. Other restaurants coming to the area include a Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, and 7Brew Coffee.
Besides the new restaurants, Kroger is building a new 123,000-square-foot store at 1650 Sunbury Road, near the intersection with Glenn Road. Kemba Financial Credit Union and Chase Bank are building new locations along the U.S. 36/State Route 37 corridor as well.
More homes and apartments are also coming to the east side as part of the Northwood development, which will eventually bring more than 1,000 residences.
Delaware County broke ground May 18 on a $35.8 million facility that will hold four county service agencies along State Route 521. The city is also in the process of transforming a former vacant building into a $14.6 million fire station at 680 Sunbury Road along U.S. Route 36.
To accommodate all the traffic that will follow the growth, the city and county are extending Byxbe Parkway from Bowtown Road south to U.S. 36/State Route 37 at Glenn Road. Delaware city will be wrapping up the multi-year “Point” Improvement Project to widen the roadway where U.S. 36/Sunbury Road and State Route 37 meet underneath the railroad bridge.
