Week 8 Recap: Mansfield Senior Tygers, Lucas Cubs pick up much-needed wins

MANSFIELD — League championship races and playoff positioning are starting to take shape after Week 8.

Richland County teams went a combined 4-5 on the week with one team picking up its first victory of the season. Let’s see who it was and which teams won with this week’s Week 8 recap.

Mansfield Senior 34, Wooster 21

The Mansfield Senior Tygers handed head coach Antonio Fletcher his first career victory on Friday night with a 34-21 Week 8 Ohio Cardinal Conference victory at Wooster.

After falling behind 7-0 early, the Tygers got on the board when Ryan Au scooped up a fumble and returned it 41 yards to tie things up with 11:04 left in the second quarter. The Tygers then responded to a Wooster score when DJ Corbin caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Sean Tanner to send the Tygers into halftime tied with the Generals at 14 apiece.

The Tygers came out of the halftime locker room on fire as Au cught a 24-yard pass from Tanner with 3:30 left in the third quarter and scored again just over a minute later when Terrance Feagin caught a 42-yard pass from Tanner with 2:18 left in the third. Corbin caught his second TD of the game on a trick-play pass from Tai Pickett for 13 yards to build a 34-14 lead and put the game out of reach with 9:04 left.

Tanner had a big game completing 9-of-18 passes for 101 yards and three touchdowns while Pickett completed his only attempt for 13 yards and a score. Feagin caught two passes for 44 yards and a TD while Corbin caught two passes for 33 yards and two scores and Au caught one pass for 24 yards and a TD.

Ajahi Evans had 13 carries for 89 yards while Pickett had four carries for 38 yards and Au added six carries for 32 yards. The Tygers had 250 yards of total offense with 136 on the ground and 114 through the air.

The defense held strong with just 177 yards allowed and created five turnovers.

The Tygers are now 1-7 and 1-4 in the OCC. They travel to Canton GlenOak in Week 9.

Lucas 22, Reynolds (PA) 15

The Lucas Cubs got a much-needed victory over Reynolds on Friday night after a long trip to Pennsylvania.

Brady Guegold was a man on a mission with 216 yards rushing and three touchdowns while Carter Cox scored atwo point conversion. He had three carries for 37 yards.

The Cubs got back to what they do best with 304 yards rushing on 49 carries while also throwing for 37 yards for 341 yards of totla offense. They forced three fumbles on defense and recovered one.

They improve to 3-5 and host Lutheran East in Week 9.

Highland 13, Clear Fork 10 OT

The Highland Scots shocked the Clear Fork Colts on Friday night in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 13-10 win in overtime.

After a scoreless first half, the Colts struck first with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Hoeflich to Quentin Rinehart but the Scots answered right back with a Kane Stover 29-yard run to make it 7-7, where the score stayed through regulation.

In the first overtime, Clear Fork’s Nash Evans booted a 22-yard field goal to give the Colts the 10-7 lead, but Stover led the Scots to a shocking victory with a one-yard touchdown run for the walkoff win.

Stover had 92 yards rushing on 11 attempts and caught three passes for 26 yards.

Hoeflich completed 8-of-15 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown with an interception. He also had 78 yards rushing on 22 attempts whike Porter Schmidt also ran for 54 yards on 13 carries and caught three passes for 15 yards. Evans ran for 20 yards and caught two passes for 24 yards.

The Colts fall to 5-3 and 3-2 in the MOAC and will try to rebound next week at River Valley. Highland is now 3-5 and 2-3 and will host Ontario in Week 9.

Dover 32, Madison 17

The Madison Rams took a tough 32-17 loss to Dover on Friday night in nonconference action.

Madison is now 2-6 and hosts Lexington in Week 9.

Monroeville 55, Plymouth 0

The Plymouth Big Red were shut out by Monroeville, 55-0, on Friday night in Firelands Conference play.

The Big Red is now 1-7 and hosts Western Reserve in Week 9.
