President Donald Trump makes either-or decisions every day. The difference is that his choices are made in full view of the country and the world. It tells us a lot about his true feelings.
This week, Spirit Airlines is ceasing operations and laying off 17,000 employees. The airline had asked the federal government for a $500 million bailout loan that would have given it a chance to survive as the summer travel season began. But our president decided not to give them one more chance.
At the same time, Sen. Lindsey Graham is introducing a bill in Congress that would provide $400 million of funding for the controversial new ballroom at the White House. So, who loses with this decision and who wins?
Well, obviously, 17,000 former Spirit Airlines employees lose. And it has been reported that Spirit’s low fares caused competing airlines to lower their prices by as much as 14%. So, who else loses? All those who fly any airline.
But Trump gets his ballroom. So, who wins there? Answer: Trump and his guests − foreign and domestic.
Trump’s priority decision is to eliminate employment for 17,000 Americans and potentially raise the cost of airline travel for the rest of us so that he can have his ballroom. Is that what he was elected to do?
