How much school do students have to attend?

A decade ago, ahead of the 2014-15 school year, the Ohio State Board of Education changed its regulation of instructional time from “days” to “hours.”

Schools are bound by Ohio law when it comes to providing a minimum number of instructional hours each year, said Lacey Snoke, chief communications officer for the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.

“Many schools and districts proactively build additional hours into their school-year calendars to meet these requirements, even when unexpected closures occur,” Snoke said. “If closures cause a school to fall below the required number of hours, the school must extend its scheduled year.”

The normal yearly state requirement is 455 hours for preschool, 910 hours for grades K-6 and 1,001 hours for grades 7-12.

“As an alternative, schools and districts may implement approved plans to make up hours through online learning,” Snoke said. “These plans allow schools to replace the equivalent of up to three school days when closures occur due to allowable circumstances, including hazardous weather conditions.”
