Take a walk on the wild side with Salt Fork's August programs

There is plenty of opportunities to explore Salt Fork State Park throughout August as the park’s naturalist staff hosts a variety of hikes, fishing programs, wildlife encounters and evening adventures.

Anglers can try their luck during the park’s popular Fishin’ Friday program on Aug. 7, where poles, bait and tackle are provided, according to a community announcement.

Some of the programs repeat throughout the month, such as hikes to Hosak’s Cave on Aug. 8, 15 and 29, and Creekin’ excursions on Aug. 9, 16 and 30. Fishin’ Friday returns Aug. 14, 21 and 28.

The more adventurous may be interested in evening canoe excursions Aug. 8 and 29. Participants ages 6 and older can paddle portions of the lake while learning about the park’s natural surroundings. And wildlife enthusiasts can spend some time with Ohio’s native reptiles during Snakes Alive! on Aug. 15 at the Salt Fork Eco-Discovery Center.

Families with young children can enjoy

Nature Story Time on Aug. 20, in partnership with the Guernsey County Public Library, is for family with young children.

Salt Fork Squatchin on Aug. 28 is one of the more unique offerings for the month. Participants will learn about the legend of Bigfoot at Salt Fork State Park before heading out on an evening hike and field research activity.

Most programs are weather dependent. Registration is required for fishing and canoeing programs through the Salt Fork Eco-Discovery Center. The center is open Sundays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
