Suspect in Cincinnati party bus killing also shot driver, police say

A 28-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a fellow party bus passenger in downtown Cincinnati also shot the bus driver while trying to disembark, police said in court filings.

De’Angelo Robinson, of West Price Hill, is charged in Hamilton County Municipal Court with murder and felonious assault. He appeared on Feb. 16 for an arraignment before Judge Mike Peck, who set bonds totaling $1.5 million.

Robinson was aboard a party bus early in the morning on Valentine’s Day when he fatally shot 29-year-old Tobias Hood with a 9mm handgun, court documents state. The shooting happened on Third Street, just a three-minute walk from The Banks and Great American Ball Park.

In an arrest report, Cincinnati police described the shooting as an “unprovoked attack.”

Robinson told police that he became paranoid after seeing Hood with a gun in his jacket, the report states. He then shot Hood at least one time, killing him.

While trying to exit the bus, according to the report, Robinson shot the bus driver in the face for “failing to open the bus door quick enough.”

Police said that Hood died at the scene, while the bus driver was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in serious condition.

Derek Gustafson, Robinson’s attorney, said in court that Robinson acted in self-defense, believing that Hood was possibly about to open fire on him.

Robinson has no prior convictions in adult or juvenile courts, the attorney said, adding that Robinson attended school in North College Hill and has worked as an industrial crane operator since May 2025.

He is currently being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center awaiting trial. A grand jury is expected to hear the case by Feb. 24 to decide whether Robinson will face felony prosecution in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.
