PERRY TWP. – An approximately one-mile section of the Sippo Lake Trail is getting a facelift.
The north entrance of the trail — starting at the bridge near the playground at Exploration Gateway, 5712 12th St. NW — is being repaved with new blacktop. Work, which started last week, is to extend east to the trail’s entry point at the marina parking lot.
The improvement project is expected to take a few weeks, but work may stretch a longer due to recent rainfall, according to Angela Palomba, community engagement manager for the Stark County Park District. The Sippo trail is closed to accommodate the upgrade.
Cost of the resurfacing effort is about $162,000. The contractor is Albatross Asphalt of Lakeville.
Upgrades are being funded by the Diana L. Stadelman family, McKinley Eagles Charity, Stark Library and Friends of Stark Parks, Palomba said.
The park district manages more than120 miles of trails countywide, which include 25 miles of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath, and approximately 8,000 acres of land spread over 15 parks and a handful of lakes.
The path resurfacing is not the only repair at Sippo Lake Trail within the last year. The 150-foot long boardwalk bridge was replaced in September 2025 after a March 25 arson fire destroyed the structure.
Individual and corporate donations helped to fund the approximately $55,000 bridge work.
A public dedication to celebrate the Sippo Lake Trail resurfacing is set for 3 p.m. Sept. 10 at Exploration Gateway.
