Removal of all House of Loreto nursing residents to be completed soon

CANTON – All residents at the House of Loreto nursing facility are expected to be relocated by the end of the weekend.

As of Jan. 21, four residents remain at the 50-bed facility at 2812 Harvard Ave NW. Eight residents were moved quickly on Jan. 20 amid concerns of limited overnight staff.

Two more are expected to be moved by the end of the day with all residents in new facilities by Jan. 25.

State officials went to court in January and pushed to shut down the House of Loreto after investigators alleged dangerous violations, including unmonitored kidney issues that resulted in hospitalizations, medications being administered without proper documentation and poor wound care among the residents.

A state transition team from the Ohio Department of Health was deployed earlier this month to help oversee resident care.

During a Jan. 21 preliminary injunction hearing in Stark County Common Pleas Court, attorneys representing the Ohio Department of Health and the facility’s owner, Hari Group, agreed to continue cooperating to relocate remaining residents.

Magistrate Kristen Moore extended the Jan. 13 court order requiring the House of Loreto to stop accepting new residents, relocate current residents and comply with all state and federal laws.

Ohio Department of Health attorneys declined to comment on the situation after the hearing, and Hari Group, represented by the law firm Flannery Georgalis of Cleveland, also declined to comment.

The Hari Group has not commented on the lawsuit or any state action this month. It took over ownership of House of Loreto, which has been at the site since the early 1960s, in 2025, shifting the longtime Catholic-run nursing home to private ownership.
