Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher is sponsoring a free self-defense class from 12-2 p.m. Saturday at Team Chitwood’s Martial Arts & Fitness.
The event is being offered in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“It’s to honor the strength and resilience of domestic violence survivors,” said Kayla Cash, director of victim services for the prosecutor’s office. “Research indicates that self-defense training can significantly improve self-confidence and feelings of empowerment, qualities often targeted in abusive relationships.
“Domestic violence affects not only the physical well-being and safety of survivors but also their mental health. Self-defense classes have proven effective in helping survivors rebuild confidence and regain empowerment.”
Team Chitwood’s Martial Arts & Fitness is located at 314 E. Main St. in Lexington.
A decorated martial artist, Chitwood holds six black belts, three national titles and a world championship title. His passion for martial arts has positively affected tens of thousands of students at his academies, where he offers a range of martial arts and fitness programs.
Cash said Chitwood previously held a self-defense class for the prosecutor’s office.
“We all loved it, and so Jodie wanted to do it for the public as well,” she said.
Participants are asked to wear athletic clothing and no jewelry. They can register at https://sparkpages.io/cart/2/?i=_UPzb&c=&ocu=.
