Portage County Week 1 high school football roundup: Mogadore, Rootstown, Streetsboro win

In addition to our live coverage of Roosevelt-Ravenna football, here’s a look at some of the other games that took place across Portage County:

Streetsboro 34, Copley 20: Balanced attack wreaks havoc, including two Janiere Cook rushing touchdowns

Four different players found the end zone as part of the Rockets’ explosive ground game.

Running back Janiere Cook had two rushing touchdowns, while quarterback Colton Cox and running backs Marcus Council and Logan Fincham added one apiece.

Kyle Giacomo added a key fourth-quarter pick for the Rockets (1-0), who led for most of the night.

Rootstown 42, Toledo Christian 0: Reuting brothers, defense dominate

The Rovers dominated against the Eagles, who won eight-man state titles in 2023 and 2024. In particular, Rootstown impressed defensively, holding Toledo Christian to 139 yards. The Rovers also forced four turnovers — two fumbles and two interceptions.

Rootstown (1-0) was tough to stop on the ground, rushing for 190 yards (5.6 per carry). Senior Damien Reuting led the Rovers ground game with 13 carries for 89 yards and a score. His brother, Kiel, added two touchdowns and 46 rushing yards. Mason Lisi and Peyton Simms had a defensive touchdown apiece, with Lisi notching an 82-yard pick six and Simms taking a fumble return 47 yards for a score.

Brecksville 21, Aurora 17: Bees rally from 17-point halftime deficit

The Greenmen dominated the first half, taking a 17-0 lead, before the Bees came back with 21 unanswered points after halftime.

Aurora speedster Luke McGovern started the scoring with an 84-yard punt return touchdown with Xavier Board pushing the lead to 14-0 with a short touchdown run. Eric Waid added a 28-yard field goal to give the Greenmen (0-1) a 17-0 halftime lead.

The Bees (1-0) took their only lead in the game when Max Ritter pulled in an 8-yard TD pass with 3:11 left in the game. Brody Larkins led Brecksville with 30 carries for 147 yards, while Aurora’s Xavier Board turned 17 carries into 95 yards.

Mogadore 13, Crestwood 6: Conner Lehner helps Wildcats rally past Red Devils

Conner Lehner sparked the Wildcats win with two long runs.

After Mogadore (1-0) trailed 6-0 at the half, Lehner put it in front with a 73-yard touchdown run. The senior running back added a 32-yard dash to the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Lehner finished with 166 rushing yards for the Wildcats.

Wyatt Januska led the Red Devils (0-1) with 73 yards on seven carries while James Lancaster added 46 rushing yards. Bobby Bradley scored Crestwood’s lone touchdown on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.
