No Kings rallies in Wooster and Ashland aim to to call out authoritarian threats

Hundreds of rallies are scheduled nationwide Saturday, June 14, as part of the No Kings National Day of Defiance, a mass mobilization opposing authoritarianism and political strongmen in the United States.

The rallies coincide with Flag Day and President Donald Trump’s birthday and his Salute to America parade in Washington, D.C.

More than 1,000 events have been planned across the U.S. by a coalition of national and grassroots groups, including Indivisible and pro-democracy organizations.

The events aim to build momentum for civic engagement.

What is the purpose of the No Kings protest?

Organizers say the event is a response to what they describe as rising threats to democratic institutions and the rule of law.

They cite efforts to concentrate power in the executive branch, reduce public oversight and intimidate political opponents.

“We believe in a government of the people; not of kings, not of billionaires, and not of wannabe dictators,” states the national No Kings campaign. “On June 14, communities across the country will show that we are still the majority and we are not backing down.”

According to the group’s website, the campaign’s mission is to demonstrate that “real power doesn’t come from D.C., it comes from everyday people in communities.”

“On June 14th, we’re showing up everywhere he isn’t − to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings,” NoKings.org states.

Organizers say Trump has “cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts.”
