Mike Lafreniere has been named interim dean of Ohio University Chillicothe.
According to an announcement from the university, Lafreniere will take over the role on July 1, succeeding Dr. Roberta Milliken, who is retiring after serving as dean since January 2021.
Lafreniere has been with Ohio University since 1994. He currently serves as special assistant to the associate vice provost for Regional Higher Education and Partnerships and is an associate professor of mathematics.
“I consider this such an honor to serve as interim dean of campus and community relations for the Ohio University Chillicothe campus,” Lafreniere said in the announcement. “My over-arching goal is to help Ohio University Chillicothe continue to create student experiences that instill a life-long passion for learning, build an understanding and appreciation for community, and impart a lasting, joyful memory of their time learning here.”
Interim dean has science background
Lafreniere holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and a Master of Engineering in environmental engineering, both from the University of Florida. His professional background includes teaching, academic administration and consulting in both academic and industry settings. He is known for his research in STEM education, including the “Collaboratory” approach to integrative STEM learning and his work in online assessment technologies.
Dr. Lewatis McNeal, vice provost for Regional Higher Education, expressed excitement about Lafreniere’s appointment.
“He brings a wealth of experience, a strong commitment to academic excellence and a deep understanding of the Ohio University Chillicothe campus,” McNeal said in the announcement. “His longstanding dedication to students, faculty and regional collaboration positions him well to lead the campus during this important period. His leadership will be instrumental in advancing Regional Higher Education’s shared goals for academic quality, regional engagement and student-centered learning.”
As interim dean, Lafreniere will work closely with faculty, staff and students to support the university’s mission and maintain a focus on academic excellence, student engagement and community enrichment.
Milliken, who has worked alongside Lafreniere for several years, expressed confidence in his ability to lead the campus.
“I know him to be a dedicated educator who is deeply devoted to Ohio University Chillicothe’s success,” Milliken stated in the announcement. “His experience, commitment, institutional knowledge and integrity all recommend him to the position. I have the utmost confidence that he will do an excellent job in the role.”
