Local meteorologist Mark Johnson is making his return to Cleveland television, this time joining WKYC as a regular on-air meteorologist, he announced in a Facebook post.
Johnson said he is delivering forecasts weekdays at 5, 7 and 11 p.m.
He made his return Nov. 10, according to WKYC.
“Very happy to announce that I am joining the 3News Family at WKYC,” Johnson’s post read. “Its [sic] an incredible weather team and I’m excited to be giving you your most accurate and up to date weather forecast.”
Johnson is known for his decades spent forecasting weather for Northeast Ohio viewers at WEWS News 5 Cleveland before his unexpected departure from the station earlier this year.
Why was Mark Johnson fired?
A reason why Johnson was let go or the nature of his firing was not publicly addressed, but a statement from WEWS Vice President and General Manager Steve Weinstein noted that station and parent company Scripps employees were required to “adhere to the highest ethical standards.”
An attorney representing Johnson called his firing “unfounded and disappointing,” according to a statement obtained by Cleveland.com.
“Mark Johnson has built a distinguished reputation over three decades as a trusted and respected meteorologist in the community,” Daniel Levin of Prominent Brand + Talent said in the statement. “His work has earned him the public trust and internal recognition and his performance evaluations have always been exemplary – consistently reflecting his dedication, reliability and value to Scripps and the WEWS family.”
Following his exit from WEWS, Johnson previously worked for WKYC’s parent company, TEGNA, where he forecasted for stations across Ohio on a contract basis.
Johnson graduated from Kent State University in 1988 and originally joined WEWS in 1993.
