MASSILLON – The city plans to boost spending this year to repave dozens of neighborhood streets.
The proposed resurfacing program calls for spending $1.5 million, up from $1.23 million last year.
The city repaved five miles of streets last year. The 2026 plan targets 6.8 miles, city Engineer Alex Pitts said.
“I think we’re making some headway with trying to get our roads on a 20-year (paving) cycle,” said Pitts. “(And) we have some longer stretches (of roadway) being addressed this year.”
Altogether, nearly 36 neighborhood streets are on the 2026 paving schedule. Ward 3 leads the way with parts of six roads, while Ward 1 has the least with four streets.
A few roads on the agenda include Ninth and 10th Streets NE from Lincoln Way to State Street NE; Meiner Court NE from Lake Avenue NE to the end; Massachusetts Avenue SE from 16th Street SE to 19th Street SE; Woodland Avenue SE from Erie Street S to 15th Street SE; and Walnut Road SW from Ninth Street SW to 17th Street SW.
A couple of others in line for upgrades are Erie Street S from Tremont Avenue SW to the western city limit, and Warmington Road SW from state Route 21 to the western city limit. Erie Street is separate from the city’s main project, while Warmington is a state effort, Pitts said.
Massillon councilman says city’s repaving list is fair among wards
City Councilman John Paquelet, R-Ward 6, said the Engineering Department does a fair job putting the annual repaving list together, from a ward perspective.
“I’m satisfied with the proposal,” he said. “Some of the more highly traveled roads obviously get more wear and tear.”
Massillon is in the final year of its five-year income tax levy renewal, which helps to fund annual street resurfacing projects.
Voters will be asked to renew the five-year road measure in the May 5 primary election.
City Council members could vote whether to approve the 2026 street repaving plan as soon as Feb. 17. Repaving work is likely to start in spring and run though most or all of the remaining year.
“We’re pleased with this year’s paving list,” said Mayor Jamie Slutz. “We’ll continue to evaluate and prioritize what streets need paved for the safety of our residents.”
