Fire is extinguished at Louisville's former ATI plant

LOUISVILLE ‒ The fire at the former ATI manufacturing plant was “completely extinguished” by 7 p.m. Dec. 19, the city of Louisville said.

No one was injured by the fire at 1500 W Main St., according to a Facebook post by Louisville Fire Chief Rod Bordner. He wrote someone reported the fire at 4:10 p.m.

The heavy black smoke that was seen was caused by plastic material burning in the building, the city said in a statement on Facebook.

“Air tests conducted by Stark County Hazmat between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm found no concerns with air quality,” the city said.

A message asking whether the city fire department had determined a cause for the fire was left for the department.

The city thanked all first responders who were involved in efforts at the plant.

The Canton Fire Department was among the area departments providing mutual aid.

“Looks like everyone worked together to put a good stop on the fire,” Canton officials said on Facebook amid the efforts.

To residents who were concerned about chemicals used to treat steel when the mill operated, Louisville officials advised that the chemicals were removed when the plant closed.

Stark County HAZMAT monitored the air as a precaution, city officials said.

ATI idled its specialty rolled products operation in Louisville at the end of 2021 and moved production to Vandergrift, Pennsylvania.

ATI has owned the 626,190-square-foot plant since 2004, when it acquired J&L Specialty Steel operations from Arcelor, now operating as ArcelorMittal following a merger in 2006.

The building is listed for sale on the city’s website.
