Joann Fabrics, the Hudson, Ohio-based retailer that closed its 800-plus stores in May, is making a comeback.
Kind of.
Michaels, the craft retailer that purchased Joann’s intellectual property in June, recently announced the debut of The Knit & Sew Shop featuring Joann branding and private-label brands from the bankrupt retailer. Michaels is also debuting The Party Shop, featuring an expanded selection of balloons, party supplies and more.

Now in Michaels stores across North America, The Knit & Sew Shop, featuring the Joann and Michaels logos, brings the best of both together.
The dual-branded shop offers a curated assortment of threads, sewing notions and yarn, with fabric also available in most stores. The selection includes Joann brands like the Big Twist, which hits shelves at the end of October. Other additions include:
The Knit & Sew Shop also features new in-store services, including fabric cutting tables, which will be available in more than 650 stores by mid-October.
“The launch of The Knit & Sew Shop and The Party Shop at Michaels is a transformative step forward on our mission to become the go-to destination for fueling creativity and celebration,” Michaels CEO David Boone said in a statement. “We are proud to offer an unmatched experience for creating and celebrating through our expansive product assortments, enhanced services, lower price points, and seamless in-store and online shopping options.”

The Party Shop at Michaels features custom balloon bundles and grab-and-go options for a wide assortment of party supplies. In addition to the 79,000 balloon and party items available online,
Michaels has expanded its party space in every store to accommodate 700 new products, including DIY balloon arch kits, tableware, themed paper goods and accessories. Each store also features a dedicated Balloon Bar, offering an assortment of latex and foil balloons, as well as customizable balloons.
How many Michaels stores are in Ohio?
Michaels has 47 stores in Ohio, including seven in Cincinnati, three in Columbus and several in Northeast Ohio, according to its website.
Joann closes all its stores after filing for bankruptcy twice in the span of one year
Joann closed all its locations after filing for bankruptcy in January 2025. It was the company’s second bankruptcy in less than 12 months. Previously, Joann Inc. filed for bankruptcy in March 2024.
