Interstate 71 and Columbia Parkway are back open Monday morning after a fiery crash which left one person dead.
Roads and exits on Fort Washington Way were closed overnight after a semi crash and fire below it before 6:50 p.m. Sunday, May 3.
The overpasses and bridges were inspected and cleared to open late Sunday night, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. However, due to previously scheduled maintenance on the Lytle Tunnel, I-71 north remained closed overnight.
The name of the semi driver who was killed in the crash has not been released. Emergency and transportation officials did not say what caused the crash or if any other vehicles were involved.
Heavy fire engulfed both the cab and the trailer of a semi, Assistant Fire Chief Matt Flagler told Enquirer media partner Fox 19 in a press conference. Smoke was seen pluming in the sky around the time of the crash.
The driver of the semi was trapped inside when firefighters arrived. Firefighters managed to remove the driver, but the driver died from their injuries, Flagler said.
Flagler said there was fire damage to the overpass, but they did not anticipate structural damage.
