How this tornado season stacks up. Map the 19 so far this year

The weather in Greater Cincinnati have been volatile in recent weeks.

Downpours have caused summer flooding and strong winds have ripped off roofs while also producing the occasional tornado.

Close to 20 tornadoes have been confirmed to have touched down in the region since the beginning of summer. All of 2025 saw a total of 22. Here’s what the data says about how this tornado season stacks up:

The National Weather Service at Wilmington captures data for 52 counties across Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. It has recorded 19 tornadoes in and around the Greater Cincinnati area. The most came on June 18, when nine tornadoes ripped through different parts of the region.

Greater Cincinnati’s tornadoes usually peak around May and June, according to meteorologist Logan Clark. This year, Clark said tornadoes have peaked later in the season. He said that’s likely due to normal seasonal variation.

Is climate change increasing Cincinnati’s tornadoes?

Every year since 2019, data shows Greater Cincinnati has seen more tornadoes than its average, which is around 10 to 11. But Clark said it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why.

Clark said there’s a plausible link between increased tornadoes and climate change. Warmer air increases the potential for disruptive weather, he said.

At the same time, Clark said there’s been a large increase in the availability of cameras in the past few years to document tornadoes that officials would otherwise not have been able to confirm. Less powerful tornadoes, such as EF0s and EF1s, are being reported more now, he said.

There hasn’t been enough research that separates the two variables to definitively explain what role climate change has had in Cincinnati’s more active tornado seasons, he said.

“Yes, there has been an increase in the frequency of tornadoes,” Clark said. “But how much of that is because of the fact that there’s better technology? I just think the data right now is inconclusive.”
