PLAIN TWP. − On select evenings in Plain Township, the small dining room at Freudy’s Bar & Grille fills quickly with lively regulars and first-time visitors alike, drawn by upscale comfort food, generous portions and a welcoming atmosphere.
A neighborhood favorite with staying power
I met Jackson Township resident Nicole Hagy, community outreach and grants coordinator for Akron Municipal Court, for dinner at Freudy’s Bar & Grille at 6326 Market Ave. N, the evening-only companion of Samantha’s. Opened in 2011 by owners Dave and Laurie Freudeman, the space blends a relaxed bar feel with a menu that elevates familiar favorites.
We were seated at a high-top table as the room steadily filled. By the time we left, a short wait had formed, a clear sign that reservations are a smart move.
Warm service sets the tone
Our server, Doug, immediately made us feel at ease. He offered thoughtful recommendations and guided us through the menu with the confidence of someone who knows it well. Drinks arrived quickly, giving us time to take in both the regular offerings and nightly specials.
Starters and salads deliver
Hagy began with the crab-stuffed mushrooms ($13), which arrived hot, generously portioned and packed with flavor. They disappeared quickly, along with the complimentary bread service.
We both opted for side salads ($6), a familiar favorite from Samantha’s. Each featured crisp romaine, sliced almonds, dried cranberries and shaved pecorino romano. The house lemon honey vinaigrette added a bright note, while the white French dressing, served on the side, offered a richer alternative.
Entrees that satisfy
For her entrée, Hagy chose the chicken parmesan ($21), served over angel hair pasta with red sauce and garlic bread. The chicken was pan-fried to a crisp exterior while remaining tender inside, and the pasta carried just the right amount of tangy sauce.
I debated the halibut special before following Doug’s recommendation: Dave’s prime pork chop ($27). The French-cut, bone-in chop lived up to its reputation. Juicy and well-seasoned, it showcased the benefits of cooking meat on the bone, which helps retain moisture and flavor. The portion was generous enough to take half home.
The chop was served with fresh asparagus, and I added a baked potato with sour cream. Together, the plate struck a balance between hearty comfort and a more refined presentation.
A lively, welcoming atmosphere
Throughout the meal, the dining room buzzed with energy. Couples, families and groups of friends filled the tables, contributing to a convivial, neighborhood feel that’s increasingly difficult to find. It is easy to understand why Freudy’s has remained a local favorite for more than a decade.
Plenty of options for return visits
The menu offers something for nearly every taste, from steaks such as New York strip, flat iron and filet mignon to seafood options such as pecan-crusted salmon, Atlantic cod and signature tuna. Pasta dishes range from linguine Alfredo to baked penne and Greek-style aglio e olio, with a build-your-own option for added flexibility. Burgers and sandwiches round out the selection.
A sweet finish
Though we were full, we shared the dessert special: pineapple upside-down cheesecake. Light yet flavorful, it provided a bright, satisfying end to the meal.
The takeaway
Freudy’s Bar & Grille pairs upscale comfort food with friendly service and a lively setting. For those who have not yet visited, it is worth making a reservation and experiencing one of Stark County’s enduring dining spots.
