Driver safe after car goes off SR 315, lands on frozen Olentangy River

A driver is safe after the vehicle they were driving plunged off a road and landed on the frozen Olentangy River near the border of Columbus’ Northwest Side and Sharon Township.

Columbus police took a call around 1:40 p.m. Feb. 13 reporting that a Kia Soul was traveling north on State Route 315 when it veered off the highway. The subcompact crossover vehicle flew over the Olentangy Trail and down a tree-lined embankment, landing on its passenger side on the frozen Olentangy River north of Bethel Road, according to Dispatch photojournalist Adam Cairns, who came across the scene.

The driver of the Kia was outside of the vehicle and safe when the Columbus Division of Fire arrived on scene, according to a spokesperson for the fire division. It is unclear if the driver was treated at the scene or taken to a local hospital.

Sharon Township Fire Department officials, who were also at the scene, could not be reached for additional information.
