I was dismayed when I read the “Sniper tried to kill Trump” article on the opinion page in the July 20 Beacon Journal. I think the writer, Ingrid Jacques of USA Today, is a bit confused.
The Democrats did not make Donald Trump a federal felon. He did that by himself, 34 times.
JD Vance, in 2016, then a “never Trump guy,” referred to Trump as “America’s Hitler.” As far as I know, JD was not a Democrat then.
Trump’s tough measures on immigration are not “working” for those who have been deported and jailed without due process. They are “working” to ignore, defy and dismantle the Constitution.

The cost of caring
It’s been a couple of weeks since Ms. Nicole Russell’s June 29th column, “Conservatives are happier than liberals,” but I am still pondering the results of Nate Silver’s analysis reflecting the title of her column.
I have seen other letters to the editor regarding the possibility that conscientiousness and a keen awareness of the suffering of others plagues us liberals.
My conservative uncle, whom I dearly love, once told me he “rarely” feels depressed. This did not surprise me; while he is a very caring person, his concern is chiefly for those in his own family first, proceeded by care for those just outside his own circle, then outwards in decreasing priority. This is precisely how JD Vance has described his care for others.
How much happier I could be if only I worried about my own children, husband, mom, brother, other relatives (in that order).
I would argue many liberals do envy the happiness of those conservatives who believe our responsibility in life is only to those in our personal worlds. But it’s doubtful they would be willing to exchange their empathy for a child suffering in another neighborhood or country for such mirth.

Here’s what Emilia Sykes has done
I am responding to Carl Shay’s letter in the VOP of July 20. He wanted to know what Emilia Sykes has done since he continues to see his taxes increasing. I just participated in a phone-in town hall (she has them regularly, where you can address issues). Ms. Sykes and a representative from the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank and Children’s Hospital addressed the cuts to Medicaid and food assistance.
It was very informative. Ms. Sykes voted AGAINST Trump’s big horrible bill, so please give her some credit. Where was Bernie Moreno, who voted FOR it? Ms. Sykes has regular town halls to discuss our problems and concerns. She is having a live town hall in August. Sign up for her newsletter and you will see how hard she is working for us. You can reach her office at 330-400-5350.
Try contacting Bernie Moreno and you will receive the same canned response that he wanted to serve the American people. The only person he is serving is the orange man. I don’t even want to say his name.

Stand together for our freedoms
The Trump MAGA regime has defied a host of court orders that ensure our money funds the services we need, protect our air and water, ensure children learn, protect Social Security and Medicare, and return residents who have been abducted and sent to notorious foreign prisons in order to seize more power and line the pockets of their billionaire backers.
This is an assault on our country, our families and the core freedoms we value as Americans. Our freedom to earn a good living, retire in dignity, get affordable care and have leaders who represent us, not rule over us.
Now is the time for every person who values liberty and justice to unite and fiercely defend our communities against this regime of the bullies for the billionaires. Only by joining boldly together can we safeguard our freedoms, protect our families and reclaim our future from those determined to dominate us. Please demand your members of Congress stand up for you and refuse to consider any MAGA legislation until the court orders are obeyed.

Can we get our federal taxes back?
If the federal government has millions of dollars to pay for housing immigrant detainees in county jails, why on earth isn’t that money instead being used to increase immigration courts and judges to get detainees quickly released? Yes, these are actually people, most of whom have, at best, only traffic violations. Why are our tax dollars spent on harassment, cruelty and human degradation instead of human compassion? What has happened to American humanity? Can we get our federal taxes back? We want no part of this.
