Wellman, 33, was booked into the Dearborn County Jail and has been charged with resisting law enforcement and murder.

The Dearborn County Coroner’s Office has not released the identity of the man who was shot dead ahead of the manhunt.

According to a news release from the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement was sent sent to U.S. 50 near Campo Verde Drive Gilday Drive in Dillsboro before 6 a.m. on Aug. 14 after a 911 caller said they heard multiple gunshots.

One caller told operators that a blue vehicle was heading east on U.S. 50 and that one person in the vehicle “did not look good,” the sheriff’s office told Fox19. Another caller reported that a blue SUV pulled into Texas Gas Road with two people in the car total, one of them laying down in the seat.

Sgt. Travis Pendergast saw a vehicle stopped on Hueseman Road at about 5:55 a.m., the release said. Pendergast approached the vehicle, and after a short interaction, the driver of the blue SUV fled in his vehicle.

At 6:06 a.m., the Kentucky-registered vehicle was located with no one in it. It had been crashed into a road barrier near 9750 Hueseman Road.

At 7:20 a.m., Dearborn County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Cook located a dead man in a wooded area next to Texas Gas road near the intersection of Hueseman Road, the release said. The man appeared to have been shot multiple times. The man was taken to the Hamilton County Morgue for an autopsy.

According to Fox19, it was around 10 a.m. that the sheriff’s office put out an alert they were searching the Hueseman Road and Laughery Creek area in Aurora for the person.

A helicopter, drones, and K9 teams were used to search the area for the driver of the vehicle, according to the release.

At 11:15 a.m., Wellman was found in a creek and was taken into custody.
