CHILLICOTHE — Over the last few weeks, members of the Creative Aging Class have met regularly to create new pieces of art using creative techniques. Along the way, participants have also made new friends. Now, these artists have combined their work to create a gallery for all to enjoy.
The Creative Aging Class Series was open to those 55 and older and was taught by Artist Jessica Held. The class, which is funded through the IMLS and the State Library of Ohio, encouraged aging adults to experiment with their creativity and to build social connections.

Held said it has been enjoyable getting to know each artist throughout this experience. One way she got to know them was through the items they picked for the cyanotype photograms project. This style of art involves putting items on light-sensitive paper and exposing them to UV light, leaving behind an outline of what was once there.
Some artists used stencils and lace to create pictures, while others brought in personal items that brought them joy. For example, Debbie Klinger brought in a note her granddaughter wrote that reads, “you ned to selbat.” It was written shortly after Klinger beat cancer and her granddaughter heard someone telling her she needed to celebrate the accomplishment. Though it happened years ago, she still has the original note and has now captured a copy of it forever in a new-to-her art style.
The Creative Aging Art Show will be on display at the Chillicothe & Ross County Public Library’s Northside Branch until Aug. 26, 2026.
