Coshocton City Schools superintendent makes exit with no answers

COSHOCTON − Mark Kowalski is no longer superintendent of Coshocton City Schools, but the reasons why remain a mystery.

The board of education held a special meeting on Feb. 2, where it approved a separation agreement between Kowalski and the district related to the five-year contract signed in April 2023. It also accepted the resignation of Kowalski, which he submitted on Jan. 31, citing retirement.

School board members present at the meeting declined comment on the situation that led to paid administrative leave for Kowalski on Jan. 21.

At that time, board president Susan Mann stated the situation was an internal matter and the board was working with its legal counsel regarding it. She also said the board was made aware of concerns regarding Kowalski over the course of the last few months. She said it was not a criminal matter.

The Tribune has filed a formal public records request to the district asking for copies of the separation agreement, resignation letter, documents pertaining to the internal investigation into Kowalski that led to the initial leave of absence and communications between Kowalski and school district personnel and any school district personnel, including board members, and legal counsel regarding the matter.

Mann said as far as the board was concerned, the matter was concluded.

“We appreciate our administrative team, our staff, our parents and the public’s patience and support as we work through this process,” the board said in an official statement. “The board remains strongly committed to fulfilling its mission statement, which is in partnership with families and community, the school district will empower individuals to become literate, respectful, responsible and independent lifelong learners in an ever-changing global society.”

Matt Nicholas was named interim superintendent on Jan. 21 and will remain in that position for the time being. Mann said the board has made no decision yet regarding a superintendent search.
