The Cleveland Browns and general manager Andrew Berry are not done making moves this offseason.
Earlier this week, multiple reports surfaced that the Browns hosted veteran defensive end Jadeveon Clowney for a visit. And while the longtime NFL pass rusher did not leave Cleveland in the best of ways back in 2022, the front office is seemingly willing to amend the soured relationship this offseason.
When asked about potentially bringing Clowney back this year on Thursday, Berry reflected on his last stint with the organization, saying the Browns feel comfortable bringing him back.
“Reconciliation is possible,” Berry stated. “I don’t subscribe to the notion of defining people by their worst or best moment … we feel comfortable bringing him back in the organization, if it’s the right fit on both sides.”
Will the Browns sign Clowney this offseason?
Clowney, the former No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, has been a key veteran in the league over the last few seasons.
Before his first stint in Cleveland, the once highly-touted EDGE spent time with the Houston Texans, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Tennessee Titans. In 2021, however, Clowney would sign with the Browns in hopes that he could be the perfect complementary piece alongside Myles Garrett. He would then play in 26 games for the organization in two years, recording 65 tackles, 11 sacks, and three forced fumbles.
Unfortunately for Cleveland, it was made clear that Clowney did not want to play second fiddle to Garrett, thus causing him to depart from the team after the 2022 season.
Now, with Garrett off to the Los Angeles Rams, the Browns could use an additional veteran to help their defensive end rotation in 2026. Third-year star Jared Verse is set to become the team’s primary pass rusher this season, with Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire as the secondary pieces to the unit. Adding Clowney would give Cleveland a much-needed veteran presence in their defensive end rotation for the 2026-27 NFL season.
Clowney, despite being 33 years old entering this season, still has plenty of juice left. Last year, the prolific defender recorded 41 tackles and 8.5 sacks with the Dallas Cowboys, making him a perfect target for the Browns this offseason.
