Cleveland brows superstar Carson Schwesinger provided the first scare of camp. On Saturday, the second-year player was out on the field but was not practicing for the Browns.
Head coach Todd Monken has said publicly that he does not do veteran rest days, not that Schwesinger would qualify for that, but he was out on Saturday, indicating that he is dealing with an injury. To this point, there has been nothing said about whatever injury he is dealing with, but this is just a great reminder of what is always lurking in the shadows: the injury.
Browns’ superstar linebacker Carson Schwesinger missed Saturday’s practice with a currently undisclosed injury.
The Browns’ defense has a truly elite first string. The defensive line has the potential to be great; Schwesinger and Quincy Williams are going to be a great partnership at the linebacker position, and then the secondary could be elite. That is, with the first string.
The falloff from the first string to the second string on the Browns’ defense is steep. They go from potential All-Pro players across the board to a lot of unknown players who have to prove themselves.
The Schwesinger injury is a perfect example of this. If he can’t play, the Browns’ options behind him are rookie Justin Jefferson or veterans Nathaniel Watson or Winston Reid. After the injury on Saturday, Easton Mascarenas-Arnold took Schwesinger’s place for the practice.
It’s not to say that those guys can’t do it; they just aren’t Carson Schwesinger.
The hope is that Schwesinger’s injury is just day-to-day and he isn’t dealing with anything serious. For me, I almost wonder if they should just put him in bubble wrap and tell him to come back in a month.
That’s obviously not reality, but the Browns’ season in 2026 is going to be very fragile. One or two injuries can derail the entire thing, and the hope is that they are able to avoid them. The reality is that’s impossible.
