ZHS girls clamp down on Heights; TV tops Philo, Jan. 31 top performers

ZANESVILLE — Ta’Myah Taylor scored a career-high 10 points and keyed a strong defense as Zanesville secured a 47-43 win against visiting Pataskala Licking Heights in a Licking County League-Buckeye Division game on Feb. 1 at Winland Memorial Gymnasium.

Zanesville led 34-23 after three quarters but found itself in a tussle down the strertch due to 3-of-10 free-throw shooting in the final quarter. But the Hornets were only 8-of-16 and Ayawana Gladden had a pair of key baskets as the Lady Devils prevailed.

Gladden had 14 points, Achaia Walker 10 and Lakeyah Butcher seven for ZHS. Heights managed only 12 field goals — seven inside the arc.

Tri-Valley 46, Philo 36: Cami Susil sank six straight free throws in the fourth quarter to help the visiting Scotties keep am arm’s length from the Electrics in an MVL-Big School skirmish at The Power Plant.

Tri-Valley yielded only 26 points through three quarters as Philo hit only 4 of 23 3-pointers and 12-of-42 overall. Emma Smith had 12 points, Maddie Garber 10 and Susil eight.

Macy Spiker’s game-high 16 points paced Philo; Emily Stockdale contributed 14.

Crooksville 48, Meadowbrook 30: Lexi Van Meter fired in a game-high 24 points and Mylee Davis added 12 in a convincing MVL-Small School win for the Ceramics.

Van Meter, who hit 8 of 10 free throws, scored 21 of her points in the first 24 minutes as Crooksville built a 41-26 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Sheridan 51, John Glenn 13: The Generals produced another shut-down defensive effort and saw eight players score to remain one game up in the MVL-Big School Division.

Mylie Forgrave and Nora Cooperrider had 11 points and Ivy Daly eight for the Generals, who led 26-9 at the half. Cooperrider was 3-of-4 from behind the arc and has 12 3s in her last three games.

Brynli Cavezza had six points for John Glenn.

West M 65, Maysville 24: Lyla Johnson fired in nine of her 19 points in the first quarter to lead nine Tornadoes who scored in a convincing MVL crossover conquest at Gary Ankrum Gymnasium.

Teriauna Brandford and Calie Smith had nine points and Debra Allen eight as West led 20-5 after the first quarter and pulled away.

Rachel Gundelfinger had six points for Maysville.

Morgan 64, River View 39: Myleigh Williams led a balanced attack with 16 points for the Raiders in an MVL-Big School road win in Warsaw.

Myka Augenstein added 13 points for Morgan, which travels to Tri-Valley on Feb. 2.

Elaina Brenly scored a game-high 18 points and Kortnee Mickle chipped in 10 for the Lady Bears.

Boys Basketball

John Glenn 60, Tri-Valley 50: Stehl Bates keyed a 38-point second half for the Muskies with 17 of his game-high 26 points in an MVL-Big School win in New Concord.

John Glenn led by three with 50 seconds left before scoring seven straight points to end the game to pull away. The Muskies were 9-of-14 at the line in the final frame.

C.J. Dolan added 10 points and Cooper Briggs and Ben Stamm nine for John Glenn, which moved 1 1/2 games up in the Big School Division.

Ryan Lamonica scored 10 of his 16 points in the first half and Troy Patterson was 7-of-7 at the line in the fourth among his 14 to pace Tri-Valley. Colten Rollison added seven points.

New Lex 44, Belmont Union Local 40 (OT): Down 42-36 after three quarters, junior Lane Ratliff fired in 10 of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter for the Panthers in a nonleague win against the Jets.

The game was tied at 38 entering overtime when Eli Stephens hit 4 of 6 free throws to help the Panthers pull away. He finished with 11 points and Paul Stenson chipped in eight.

Wrestling

McClellan dominant again: Tri-Valley senior Logan McClellan was never tested in rolling to the 215-pound title at the 15-team Utica Invitational.

McClellan, ranked fourth in Division II by Borofan, pinned Bloom-Carroll’s Jacob Moore in just 1:33 in the finals. He pinned Sheridan’s Gage Moore in 1:50 in the semifinals.

Landon Jenkins added a runner-up finish at 150 for Tri-Valley, with his only setback coming in an 8-3 decision to Bloom-Carroll’s Blake Tabol-Wheeler in the finals.

Zanesville’s Trio Ladd won the 285-pound title with an 11-1 major decision in the finals against Newark’s Joshua Moody. He pinned Licking Valley’s Hudson Glaub in the semifinals.

Logan Goldsmith was second at 165 for the Blue Devils after falling by second-period pin to Loudonville’s Trevor Dawson in the finals.

Sheridan’s Foster Jones was third at 144 and Moore fourth.

Philo places six at Circleville: Ryan South (120) and Gibson Swartz (190) posted runner-up finishes to lead a steady contingent at the Clay Davis Memorial at Circleville High.

Robert Dorsey (138), Griffin Swartz (144) and Dakota Kinney (215) were third and Landon Kinney fourth (132) for the Electrics, who were fourth with 135 1/2 points.

Boys Basketball

Rosecrans 73, Grove City Christian 66 (2 OT): Tyler Bernett scored 10 of his career-high 35 points after regulation as the Bishops outlasted visiting Eagles in a Mid-State League-Cardinal Division game at Rogge Gymnasium.

The 6-5 Bernett also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, as Rosecrans (10-5, 8-1 MSL-Cardinal) stayed one game up on Millersport atop the division.

The Bishops overcame a 15-of-29 effort at the line, a 23-point effort from Silas McNeil and two other GCC players in double figures.

The game was tied at 54 at the end of regulation as all nine of Rosecrans’ fourth-quarter points came on 3s. Bernett had four buckets and a free throw in the first overtime, but Landon Brunicardi had five of his 18 points as the teams needed another extra session.

Rosecrans controlled it with a bucked from Titan Grandstaff, who had 13 points, and four free throws.

Brody Boothe added 14 points with a 5-of-6 effort at the line for Rosecrans, which led 30-29 at the half. It was tied at 45 entering the fourth.

Tri-Valley 64, Philo 48: Ryan Lamonica piled up a career-high 29 points that included an 8-of-9 effort at the free-throw line in an MVL-Big School win in Dresden.

Lamonica also knocked down a trio of first-half 3s and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Colten Rollison added 13 points and Oliver Baker seven for Tri-Valley (10-7, 8-4).

Rusty Trout had 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for Philo (7-9, 4-7), which trailed 33-21 at the half and 48-31 entering the fourth.

Maysville 87, Meadowbrook 38: The visiting Panthers led just 12-8 after a quarter, but Gator Nichols put up 40 points to lead a 16-minute fury over the next two quarters to cruise to an MVL-Small School win at The Corral.

Nichols scored 23 first-half points and added 15 more in the third quarter. He had two early points in the fourth but didn’t score again as the Panthers substituted liberally down the stretch. Nichols fell two points shy of tying his career high just a week after netting 42 at Tri-Valley.

Maysville (14-1) won its 14th straight game and 12th in a row to stay unscathed in league play.

West Muskingum 70, New Lexington 44: Cade Porter hit three of the Tornadoes’ eight 3s among his game-high 24 points in an MVL-Small School win on the road.

Porter scored 12 points in each half West (13-4, 8-3) scored 46 second-half points to break open a 24-14 game at the half. The Panthers managed only eight field goals in the first three 24 minutes.

Tavin Bennett scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and Carter Smith had eight of his 10 as seven Tornadoes scored.

Lane Ratliff had 17 points, Eli Stephens 11 and Sam Rupe eight for New Lex (2-13, 0-11).

Coshocton 56, Crooksville 49: The teams combined to shoot 30 percent from the field in an MVL-Small School clash in McLuney, but Mason Williams hit half of his 14 field goal attempts in a 17-point effort for the visiting Skins.

Crooksville (2-15, 1-10) led 23-18 at the half and 39-37 entering the fourth, but Coshocton (8-9, 4-7) outscored the hosts, 19-10, in the final quarter to complete the comeback.

J.J. Herman added 10 points, Ritchie Bay eight and Kash Murphy hauled in a career-high 18 rebounds — nine offensive — as Coshocton had 26 offensive rebounds to overcome a 4-of-20 effort on 3s. Leo Laaper added five assists.

Parker Addington paced a balanced Ceramics attack with 13 points; Hodge Taylor added 12, Kyson Riggs 11 and Drew Horn 10. Taylor added 12 rebounds.

River View 48, Morgan 44: Carter Wesney’s career-high 22 points carried the offensive load for the short-handed Black Bears (4-12, 4-7) in an MVL-Big School win at Luther Stover Gymnasium.

All of Wesney’s points came in the final 24 minutes as River View, which led 37-29 after three quarters, played without senior guard Parker Andrews due to injury. Chase Wright scored seven of his 10 markers in the second half.

Carsen Huck had 16 points and Luke Coleman 15 for Morgan (4-12, 2-9), which had only five players score.

Licking Heights 73, Zanesville 56: The visiting Blue Devils (8-8) led 33-31 at the half, but the Hornets (13-3) broke loose with a 24-12 surge in the fourth quarter in a Licking County League-Buckeye Division win in Summit Station.

Claymont 51, Ridgewood 39: The Generals dropped an Inter-Valley Conference-South Division road game to the Mustangs to fall to 9-7 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
