The City of Alliance will celebrate the Juneteenth holiday with a parade and community picnic on June 20.
Juneteenth, a national holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom. Alliance’s activities will be Saturday, June 20.
The 6th annual events kick off with a parade at 12:30 p.m. It will step off from Maple Beach Park and travel on Reed Street before turning left onto Oak Avenue, then right onto East Patterson Street, over the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Viaduct, then down South Liberty Avenue before ending at Thompson-Snodgrass Park.
Once at the park, participants can enjoy free food, local vendors, bounce houses and live music.
The event is planned by Pink Ace Association, an Alliance-based nonprofit focused on arts, culture and humanities in the Carnation City.
Crafters invited to Juneteenth sewing event
Another event is planned in Alliance to mark Juneteenth. Sew 4 Service’s Alliance chapter plans a Juneteenth charity sewing event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Alliance Commons, 405 S. Linden Ave.
Participants plan a special themed event to make quilt blocks or crochet and knit squares to recognize Juneteenth Freedom Day. The blocks and squares will be made using the colors red, dark green, yellow and gold and black.
Blocks can be made at Alliance Commons or at home. Any type of block that is 8.5 inches square can be donated. The blocks and squares will be joined together later to make quilts and blankets to be delivered to a local.
