Akron man sentenced to 15½ to 17 years in prison in police shooting

A 46-year-old Akron man who shot at civilians and two police officers was sentenced to 15½ to 17 years in prison.

Calvin Hunt pleaded guilty to felonious assault, improper discharge of a firearm and having weapons under disability, along with a 10½-year firearm specification and a repeat violent offender specification, according to a May 1 news release from the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.

Shooting occurred after Hunt’s daughter was shot, woman said

The two Akron police officers were responding to a welfare check on May 25, 2025, when they heard gunshots at the EnVision apartments on Grant Street near the University of Akron.

As they ran toward the shooting, an individual told the officers there was an active shooter, prosecutors said. Hunt had just fired shots at others during an altercation inside the apartment when he fired at the officers, who returned fire, Akron police said.

Police also said that a woman was shot in a separate incident.

In the days after the shooting, Summer Wright told The Beacon Journal that her 27-year-old daughter was shot in the leg inside their EnVision apartment during a brief verbal altercation with a man and a woman.

Wright said her daughter’s father, Hunt, was asleep at the time. He woke up to the gunshots and chased the man out of the apartment with a firearm. That’s when Wright said she heard the gunshots.

“It should never have happened,” Wright said of the entire situation. “I’m glad no one else was hurt.”
