May 17 baseball results: CVCA wins Cuyahoga Falls city title with a 3-1 win over Woodridge; Norton reaches 20 wins with 16th victory in a row
May 17 track and field results: Firestone girls and boys win Akron City Series championships; Buchtel finishes second in team standings
The Firestone girls and boys track and field teams won Akron City Series team championships on a Saturday that featured clouds, heavy rain and sunshine at Ellet. The Falcons girls team scored 188 points and the boys team scored 136 points. Janelle Harris is the coach for both Firestone teams. Buchtel finished second in both meets with the Griffins girls scoring 135 points and the boys scoring 112 points.
Firestone’s girls team won 8-of-16 events with Mariah Richards placing first in the high jump (4-feet, 10-inches), 100-meter hurdles (15.95 seconds) and 300 hurdles (48.24). Firestone’s Reese Brady was on the winning 3,200 relay (11:15.93), and won the 1,600 in 6:00.71 and the 800 in a downpour with rain blowing sideways in 2:40.09. Soraya Ledley, Kathryn Miller and Darly Malinky also ran on the 3,200 relay. The other first-place Falcons girls were Xyia West (shot put, 35-1¾) and Miller (3,200, 13:16.08).
Firestone’s boys team also won 8-of-16 events with Jaymion Jones placing first in the high jump in 6-2, the long jump in 20-7 and the 1,600 relay in 3:38.63. Taron Bowden, Emmanuel Roebuck and Elijah Grice joined Jones in the 1,600 relay. Firestone’s Elijah Dunlap crossed the finish line first in the 1,600 in 4:52.21 and the 3,200 in 12:08.24. Firestone’s Joseph Reed won the 300 hurdles in 42.54. The Falcons won two other relays: 800 relay (Bowden Mekhi Parmer, Jermaine Campbell and Bryant Robinson in 1:31.01) and 400 relay (Gucciano Stephens, Grice, Bowden and Campbell in 44.27).
Buchtel’s girls team won seven events with Miniya Mitchell placing first in four of them. Mitchell joined DeVonnah Smith, Joslynne Bushner and Lamyria Trammell to win the 800 relay in a meet record time of 1:42.68. Mitchell added victories in the 400 in 57.91 and 200 in 25.08, and was on the winning 1,600 relay in 4:18.64 with Trammell, Smith and Jada Davis. Bushner took first in the long jump (15-8), Smith won the 100 in 12.52 and the Griffins won the 400 relay in 50.04 with Bushner, Amari Banks, LeAiyla Austin-Jones and Davis.
Buchtel’s boys team won four events with Dwight Shade placing first in three of them. Shade joined Darnell Bowers, Terrence Decatur and Qi Ziah Marks to win the 3,200 relay in 9:02.21. Shade added victories in the 400 in 52.02 and the 800 in 2:05.42. Bishop Hafford contributed a win in the discus in 142-7.
East’s Donte Swain Jr. finished first in the boys 100 in 11.09 and the 200 in 22.91.
The other champions were Garfield’s Breshaun Nichols (boys shot put, 43-7), East’s Juelz Causby (boys 110 hurdles, 15.81) and Ellet’s Jordyn Alldredge (girls discus, 97-1).
