A 35-year-old woman was killed and five other people were wounded when gunfire erupted into a crowd gathered near North Street early Sunday, according to the Rochester Police Department.
Police said about 100 people were gathered on Clifford Avenue east of North Street around 3:30 a.m. Aug. 2, blocking traffic and congregating in a gas station parking lot. Investigators said an occupant of a vehicle stopped in traffic leaned out of a passenger-side window and opened fire on the crowd.
Victim identified
Police identified the woman who was killed as Shakara Green, 35. Authorities said she was standing on the sidewalk when she was struck in the neck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other five victims, ages 18, 18, 18, 20 and 21, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to their lower bodies, according to police.
Investigation ongoing
Investigators said it does not appear that Shakara Green was the intended target. No suspects were in custody as of Sunday morning.
The department’s Major Crimes Homicide Unit is investigating. Police are asking anyone with information or video related to the shooting to contact 911, the Major Crimes Section at 585-428-7157, Crime Stoppers at 585-423-9300, or email MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov.
